Thoughts from the
Archbishop of Seattle
Most Reverend Alex J. Brunett, D.D.,Ph.D.

I think Homework from Heaven can be a helpful source to assist mothers in their formation in the faith and provide them access to Scripture, Catholic Tradition and religious imagination that supports their role as mother, teacher and model of Christian life. Some of the qualities that recommend the book are:

  1. Wide-use of Scripture throughout the book;
  2. Inclusion of all the Sacraments and encouragement of both participation in sacramental life and a sacramental vision of life;
  3. Inclusion, in a useful way, of devotions like The Stations of the Cross, Saints, personal prayer, Mysteries of the Rosary etc.;
  4. Encouragement of a practical knowledge of the Works of Mercy and the Gifts of the Spirit;
  5. Reflections on the meaning of sacrifice in the context of the passion of Christ and the life of Mary.

I appreciated that the teaching is not academic and emerges from personal witness and experience of the authors. This would be a useful book for a pastoral minister to offer to a new mother or to share with a mother's group to encourage the development of family life in the faith.

Reader Reflections

I read your book. I am very impressed with it. As my children grew up, I read various books about family and family activities, but your book is so much more. You are also educating the mothers in the Catholic faith and scripture. But even more than that, you are sharing your own faith and developing the spirituality of the mothers. As they grow in their spirituality, their new relationship with God will extend to their family members.

W
hat a beautiful, inspiring book! You certainly have written an interesting “manual” for parents who will be anxious and excited about reading the next page and the next page - and the next. It's a joy to read it. You have spent many prayerful hours searching scripture and immersing yourself in His Word and love.

I think this book is a treasure for mothers, mothers-to-be and the next generation of mothers. It guides you along the spiritual path of motherhood, because it gives you concrete ways to raise your children in the faith.

Homework from Heaven is an excellent source of “soul food” for mothers as they strive to nourish and nurture the gifts that God has blessed them with in their children. Our Parish is considering giving it to parents as a part of our baptismal preparation program.
